Rodel
was busy with his singing career in the Philippines when he received
a long distance call from me (Delia), who convinced him to audition
for Miss Saigon in Canada; as well, to have a medical check up since
he was sick at that time. He came over. Though he was very sick and
could hardly moved, accompanied by our brother Jun, he went for the
first audition (in front of about 10 judges) and passed it.
Prior
to second audition, Rodel found out about his illness. He phoned the
Casting Director, Stephanie Gorin (picture below), to tell her that
he was no longer interested to join the Miss Saigon due to his illness.
Aware of the stigma attached to the disease, Rodel did not reveal
to her his real illness instead he told her that he had a cancer.
Both Rodel and Stephanie were crying on the phone. Stephanie replied
that although he would not attend the second audition, he would still
be the number one in her list and if he would change his mind, he
would still be welcomed.
After the second audition and after all the cast had been chosen,
Rodel changed his mind and decided to join the cast of Miss Saigon
(Toronto). Although he did not attend the second audition, Rodel was
assigned the role of assistant commissar and understudy for Thuy.
